Smart Meter Texas (SMT) is a platform that allows customers and authorized users to access and review their electricity usage data. It aims to help customers manage their energy consumption. SMT includes a website and a range of integration services that are available to residential and small business customers, as well as the customer’s Retail Electric Provider (REP).

Customers can also authorize access to their usage data for Competitive Service Providers (CSPs), such as other Retail Electric Providers or aggregators, brokers, and energy consultants. The usage data is also shared with the utility company (TDSP) serving the customer’s area for the purpose of managing the customer’s electric service quality.

SMT is operated by all 5 major Texas TDSPs with oversight provided by the PUCT.:

  • AEP – American Electric Power Texas Inc.
  • Centerpoint – CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric, LLC.
  • Oncor – Oncor Electric Delivery Company LLC.
  • TNMP – Texas-New Mexico Power Company

What Services Does Smart Meter Texas Offer?

After creating an account and logging in you will have access to these Smart Meter Texas services and information:

  • 15-minute Interval Data: Electricity consumption and surplus generation data are recorded by your electric meter at 15-minute intervals. The meter records 96 15-minute intervals for consumption each day and transmits the data to the Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP) for processing.
  • Daily Register Readings: A daily reading of your electric meter recorded at midnight.
  • Monthly “Billing Ready” Readings: The total electricity consumption in kWh recorded by the meter over a period of about one month. This data is used by your energy provider to calculate your electric bill based on the plan’s rate.
  • On-Demand Meter Reading (ODR): A meter reading initiated by an authorized SMT user to retrieve a reading directly from the meter.
  • Meter Attribute Information: Information about the customer’s electric meter, including the TDSP’s name, the Electric Service Identifier ID (ESIID) used to identify the unique point of electric service delivery to the customer’s home or business, the meter number, manufacturer, rating, and installation date.
  • Premise Attribute Information: Information about the location or ESIID of the customer’s electric meter The information includes the electric utility’s name, the ESIID number, the service voltage, the premise address, and the rate class.

Other than the mentioned information you will also find useful data and charts:

  • Usage Graphs: Graphs showing your electricity usage over various time periods, such as daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly.
  • Manage Data Sharing Agreements: Allow other authorized users to view your energy usage. This would typically be used to allow a comparison service to view your usage patterns to find a better plan for you.
  • Automated Emails: Receive your energy usage automatically on a regular basis straight to your email

How to create a Smart Meter Texas Account

Before registering your free account, you’ll need certain information from your most recent electricity bill. Make sure you have your energy provider’s PUCT Certificate Number, the Electric Service Identifier ID (ESIID) number, and the electric meter number. These details can typically be found on your electric bill. If you are unable to locate this information on your bill, you should contact your energy company for assistance.

An electric meter number is a unique identifier that is associated with the Electric Service Identifier ID (ESIID) number and is used to identify a specific electric meter. The meter number can be found on your electricity bill.

The Electric Service Identifier ID (ESIID) number is a unique identification number that ranges from 17 to 22 digits in length and is used to identify a specific point of service delivery, such as a home or business. The ESIID number is associated with your premise number, which represents your residence. You can find your ESIID number on your electricity bill, or on the enrollment page after you select a plan on the SlashPlan energy comparison.

Is Smart Meter Texas free?

Yes, all of the services offered by SMT are completely free of charge. You just need to be registered and signed in to view your data, and registration is also free of charge.
