CPL is a legacy provider brand

CPL Retail Energy should not be treated as a normal active enrollment page. Public shopping sources now describe CPL Retail Energy as no longer in business for new customers, and the stored CPL website failed to resolve during this refresh.

The brand still matters historically, especially in South Texas. CPL Retail Energy was tied to Direct Energy and carried PUCT certificate 10023. That history can help customers understand old bills or account records, but it is not a current shopping path.

The NRG and Direct Energy connection

Direct Energy's retail business is now part of NRG. That matters because old CPL, WTU, and Direct Energy brand references can show up in customer records even when the current provider relationship is handled under a different NRG-family brand or account system.

If you see CPL on older paperwork, compare it with your most recent bill. The current bill should identify who is responsible for billing, customer service, renewal notices, and plan terms now.

Do not use stale CPL links

Because the stored CPL website no longer resolves, do not enter personal or payment information through old CPL links. A broken or inactive provider domain is a signal to verify the current company path before taking action.

If a salesperson or broker presents CPL as a current plan, ask for the legal seller, current EFL, Terms of Service, customer-service contact, and REP certificate. If those documents point to another active brand, review that active brand's terms.

If you were a CPL customer

Keep old CPL documents if they explain contract dates, assignment language, or renewal terms. Then use your current account portal or bill to identify the provider serving you now.

If you were moved to another provider or brand, check whether your original rate and term were honored and what happens at renewal. Legacy-brand transitions can leave customers on plans they would not choose again.

For new service, compare active Texas providers with current EFLs and working enrollment paths. If you liked CPL because it was familiar in South Texas, compare active NRG-family brands and independent providers side by side.

The right replacement is not necessarily the company that inherited the brand history. It is the provider with the current documents, all-in price, and support path that fit your address.
